DC Comics' Nightwing Gets a Kryptonian Makeover: Meet Nightwing-Prime! (2026)

DC Comics has just redefined what it means to be Nightwing, giving us a brand new hero with an absolutely perfect new role! For those who might be a little new to the DC Universe, the name Nightwing might immediately bring to mind Dick Grayson, Batman's first and most famous sidekick. But here's where it gets interesting: Dick wasn't actually the first person to don the Nightwing mantle in DC's history. That honor technically belongs to Superman himself, who briefly adopted the identity during an adventure in the miniaturized bottle city of Kandor. However, the individual who truly owned the name Nightwing was Van-Zee, Superman's cousin, who was inspired by the legends of the Kryptonian hero. It was these very tales that later motivated Dick Grayson to embrace the Nightwing identity.

Now, Van-Zee has been out of the picture for a while, but DC Comics has recently reintroduced the Kryptonian version of Nightwing during their 'DC All In' era, and they've given him a fascinating twist. A young boy named Bryce Morgan was transformed by the magic of the Fifth Dimension, becoming a Kryptonian adult who embodied the very legends Dick Grayson once recalled. This new hero, calling himself Nightwing-Prime, stepped up to protect the world when a terrifying extra-dimensional entity known as the Zanni launched a final, devastating assault on Blüdhaven. Thankfully, Nightwing-Prime is now ensuring the Zanni is stopped for good, making a sacrifice that truly defines what it means to be a hero.

Nightwing-Prime: The Guardian of Childhood Wonder

In the pages of Nightwing #135, by the creative team of Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Wes Abbott, Blüdhaven is in utter chaos. The Zanni's malevolent game with Nightwing has left the city in ruins, with Titans Tower crumbling. Inside, a vulnerable Nightwing-Prime is initially incapacitated. But in a flash, Bryce awakens and miraculously prevents the collapsing tower from crushing Barbara Gordon. Nightwing-Prime quickly realizes the Zanni's sinister plan: to kidnap the children of Blüdhaven and lure Nightwing into a final confrontation. Without hesitation, Bryce resolves to venture into the Zanni's domain to aid Grayson in any way he can.

Upon entering the Zanni's bizarre realm, the 'Cirque du Sin,' Nightwing finds the missing children and searches for an escape. This strange dimension operates not on logic, but on pure imagination. So, Dick conjures a ladder, allowing the children to ascend out of the twisted domain. Just as they begin their escape, the Zanni appears, intent on recapturing them for his circus. Fortunately, Nightwing-Prime has arrived and bravely confronts the Zanni, buying precious time. Once everyone is safely out, Nightwing-Prime makes a crucial decision: he destroys the ladder, severing any connection between the Zanni's realm and the real world.

Tragically, Nightwing is unable to find a way back into the Cirque du Sin, leaving Bryce stranded on the other side. However, days later, Nightwing receives reassuring news: Nightwing-Prime is safe. While the Zanni has been appearing in children's dreams to instill fear, Nightwing-Prime consistently intervenes, defeating him and protecting the youngsters. With Nightwing-Prime as their steadfast defender, the Zanni has lost all power over children, rendering his mission to gain strength or expand his circus utterly futile. And Bryce? He's simply content to be the hero these children need.

Nightwing-Prime: A Perfect Counterbalance to the Zanni

While Bryce might not be the very first Nightwing, he brilliantly fills the void left by Van-Zee. I was initially unsure where this storyline was heading, but the final chapter masterfully brings everything together. Much of the past year in Nightwing has revolved around the Zanni, a villain who embodies outdated and limited forms of entertainment – think circuses and clowns, things that once captivated children but have largely faded in popularity. The Zanni represents a kind of toxic nostalgia, an idea that stubbornly refuses to disappear. So, the question becomes: how do you combat such a negative force?

With a positive one, of course! Just as the Zanni symbolizes the genesis of entertainment and imagination, Nightwing-Prime embodies the evolution and transformation of entertainment. More than that, he wholeheartedly embraces the concept of superheroes and the very idea of being one. Nightwing-Prime understands that by remaining in the Cirque du Sin, he's sacrificing his own life. Yet, Bryce also recognizes that true heroism isn't solely about dazzling spectacles; it's about making the necessary sacrifices. This is precisely what Nightwing-Prime does, utilizing every ounce of his power to prevent the Zanni from escaping into the wider world.

It would have been wonderful to see Nightwing-Prime continue as a prominent character in the series, but this ending feels incredibly fitting. His presence in the Zanni's realm creates a perfect equilibrium for the story's central themes: nostalgia versus evolution, circuses versus superheroes. Without this balance, the Zanni could have grown overwhelmingly powerful. Now, Nightwing-Prime can keep him in check, allowing Nightwing, a character who embodies both the spectacle of circuses and the ideals of superheroes, to live his life free from the Zanni's oppressive influence. It's a true shame that Nightwing-Prime had to make such a sacrifice, but his heroism will undoubtedly be remembered.
