Imagine a world where your car key is obsolete. That future is already here for many, but surprisingly, not for all. General Motors (GM) is finally taking a step into the modern era by inviting some electric vehicle (EV) owners to test a feature that should be standard: the digital key.
If you've never used one, a digital key is a game-changer. It allows you to lock, unlock, and even start your vehicle directly from your smartphone or smartwatch. Think about it: we're glued to our phones anyway, so why not have your car key there too? It just makes sense!
GM's Digital Key Beta Test Begins
GM is starting with a select group of Cadillac EV owners, specifically those with the 2026 Cadillac Optiq and Lyriq models. These owners will receive an over-the-air (OTA) software update to enable the digital key functionality. However, the fine print reveals that the feature is designed for 2025 model year or newer GM vehicles equipped with the necessary technology.
A Look Back: The Digital Key Timeline
Tesla pioneered the digital key concept way back in 2017 with the Model 3. But here's where it gets controversial: some automakers, including GM, have been slow to adopt this technology.
Key Details You Need to Know
To use the digital key, you'll need at least an iPhone 11 or Apple Watch Series 6, or a Google Pixel 6 Pro or 6 XL, or a newer model. Additionally, an active OnStar service plan is required. Participants in the beta test will receive dedicated support resources from GM.
The Competition: Who's Already Doing It?
In June, Apple announced that several automakers would soon offer Apple Wallet digital keys, including GM's Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac. While the rollout begins with new Cadillac EV owners, it's expected to expand to Chevy and GMC models soon. The list of manufacturers offering this feature is extensive, including Tesla, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Rivian, among others. Most vehicles that don’t offer it nowadays are either older models or entry-level trims stripped of features. That’s not the case for GM, where Cadillac owners are just gaining access to the feature.
GM's Position and the Future
GM did start handing out a physical key card with the 2025 Cadillac Lyriq, but the question remains: when will the digital version be widely available across its lineup? GM claims Cadillac is the luxury EV leader in the US, but if it falls behind Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, and others advancing new tech and software, staying on top won’t be easy.
