SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Braeden Shrewsberry had a career-defining performance, scoring a record-breaking 28 points, including a staggering eight 3-pointers, as Notre Dame dominated Evansville 82-58 on Saturday. The game was a testament to Shrewsberry's talent and the team's overall prowess.
In the opening minutes, Shrewsberry quickly set the tone, knocking down three 3-pointers and contributing 11 points. Despite Evansville's initial lead of 12-10, Notre Dame responded with a series of successful 3-pointers by Shrewsberry and Sir Mohammed, taking a 19-12 lead with 12 minutes left in the half. This momentum continued, and Notre Dame led 41-29 at halftime, with Shrewsberry alone accounting for 17 points.
However, Evansville's Connor Turnbull showed resilience, scoring 10 consecutive points and leading a 12-4 run that brought the score to 52-49 with 12.5 minutes remaining. But Notre Dame's response was swift, with Shrewsberry, Garrett Sundra, Logan Imes, and Mohammed all hitting crucial 3-pointers, extending their lead to 67-51 with eight minutes left.
Shrewsberry's performance was exceptional, making 8 out of 10 3-pointers and 9 out of 12 shots overall. Sir Mohammed also had a career-high 21 points. The Fighting Irish, now 9-3, were led by Jalen Haralson's 10 points. Meanwhile, Turnbull, despite his impressive 19 points, eight rebounds, and school-record nine blocks, struggled for the Purple Aces (4-7), who were led by Joshua Hughes' 14 points.
Notably, the game was played without the team's scoring leader, Markus Burton, who had undergone ankle surgery on Wednesday. This absence added an extra layer of challenge for the team.
The game also held a somber significance, as it marked the 48th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that took the lives of 29 people, including members of the Purple Aces men's basketball team, coaching staff, support staff, boosters, and flight crew.
