Denmark's Ørsted, Europe's largest offshore wind developer, is taking the Trump administration to court over its decision to halt work on a $5 billion project on the northeast US coast. The company filed a legal challenge on Thursday, arguing that the White House's suspension of the lease for its Revolution Wind site violates applicable law. This move comes in a series of legal battles between the renewable energy industry and Donald Trump, who has sought to block major offshore wind projects since his re-election. Trump, a vocal supporter of the fossil fuel industry, opposes renewable energy, particularly wind, citing aesthetic, cost, and efficiency concerns. The Trump administration issued a 'stop-work order' against the Revolution project in August, citing national security concerns. This decision sent shockwaves through the industry and caused Ørsted's market value to drop to record lows. However, a federal judge allowed Ørsted to restart work on the project weeks later. The company is now almost 90% complete with construction and was set to begin delivering 'reliable, affordable power' to US homes in 2026. Despite the setback, Ørsted shares rose nearly 4% on Friday following the news of the court action.
