Ohio State Quarterback Julian Sayin: 2025 Heisman Trophy Finalist (2026)

Ohio State's Julian Sayin: A Heisman Trophy Contender

For the fifth time in eight years, Ohio State's starting quarterback, Julian Sayin, has been named a Heisman Trophy finalist. This achievement marks a continuation of the university's recent success in the prestigious award.

Sayin joins an elite group of finalists, including Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love, and Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia. The Heisman Trophy, often referred to as the 'Nobel Prize of Sports,' celebrates the most outstanding player in college football.

This is Ohio State's seventh Heisman finalist since 2018, a remarkable streak that began with Dwayne Haskins in 2018 and continued with Justin Fields, Chase Young, C.J. Stroud (twice), and Marvin Harrison Jr. in 2023. No other school has matched this level of success in the same period, with Alabama being the closest at four finalists.

Despite Ohio State's strong showing, they have not had a Heisman winner since Troy Smith in 2006. This year, the odds seemed favorable for Sayin, especially after leading the Buckeyes to a potential victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game. However, Mendoza's triumph over Ohio State secured his position as the favorite for the award.

Being a Heisman finalist is a significant achievement, especially for a first-year starter like Sayin, who is the only underclassman among this year's finalists. His performance has been exceptional, making him the most efficient passer in the nation. Sayin leads the FBS with a remarkable 78.4% completion percentage and an impressive passer rating of 182.1. He is on track to break the single-season NCAA record for completion percentage, set by Oregon's Bo Nix in 2023.

Under Sayin's leadership, Ohio State had a flawless 12-0 regular season record and secured the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff. His outstanding play has also earned him recognition as a finalist for the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, and the Davey O'Brien Award, all of which will be presented during ESPN's College Football Awards Show on Friday, 7-9 p.m.

The Heisman Trophy ceremony will take place on Saturday in New York City, with ABC broadcasting the event starting at 7 p.m. This year's finalists have undoubtedly earned their place, and the competition promises to be fierce.
