A dire situation is unfolding, one that demands our attention and action. Donald Trump's policies towards Cuba are pushing the island nation towards a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
Roz Foyer, the secretary-general of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), representing over half a million Scottish workers, has issued a stark warning to the UK Government. She believes Trump is deliberately attempting to inflict mass starvation on an innocent population through his recent actions.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Trump's threat of tariffs on any country selling or providing oil to Cuba has forced the island to ration energy. Cuba heavily relied on oil shipments from Venezuela, which were halted when the US intervened in South America, arresting its leader.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has described Trump's actions as an "energy blockade", impacting transportation, hospitals, schools, tourism, and food production. The nation is experiencing severe blackouts, reduced bank hours, suspended cultural events, and fuel rationing.
Mexico has sent two navy ships loaded with humanitarian aid, including food, hygiene items, and powdered milk, to alleviate the situation.
Foyer has written to the Foreign Secretary, urging her to condemn Trump's measures. She believes collective punishment is a crime under international law, and no one, not even the US President, is above it.
"The UK Government shouldn't bow to Trump's imperialist agenda while he continues his tirade against Cuba," Foyer stated.
She went on to say, "We've made it clear to the Foreign Secretary that she must lead and show the UK Government's unequivocal support for the people of Cuba. The trade union movement will continue to reject these punitive sanctions from the US government, which will only strengthen the resolve of the Cuban people in the face of aggression."
The Foreign Office has been asked to respond, and on Wednesday, it issued a warning against non-essential travel to Cuba, citing severe infrastructure disruptions, nationwide power outages, and fuel shortages. However, it did not provide any context for these issues.
Foyer's letter to the Foreign Secretary outlines the STUC's deep concerns about the latest executive order from President Trump. She believes this action will have severe and deliberate humanitarian consequences for the Cuban people, and the UK Government must respond urgently.
The executive order expands sanctions to target countries supplying oil to Cuba, resulting in an unconscionable impact on the Cuban people. This includes power outages in hospitals, disruptions to medical treatments, school closures, and breakdowns in food systems. In essence, it's a calculated attempt to starve a nation.
The STUC also condemns the extraterritorial nature of these sanctions, where the US is coercing other sovereign nations to enforce its blockade.
In her letter, Foyer urges the UK Government to take immediate action:
- Make formal representations to the US Ambassador and Secretary of State opposing the executive order.
- Publicly condemn the escalation of sanctions and call for the order's rescission.
- Reaffirm the UK's opposition to the US blockade of Cuba.
The STUC has a long history of supporting the people of Cuba, and they believe the UK Government has a moral and legal duty to oppose measures that exacerbate humanitarian crises and undermine international law.
What are your thoughts on this complex issue? Do you think the UK should speak out against Trump's policies towards Cuba? Or is there another perspective we should consider? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below.
